How do you choose a flexible data integration platform for migrations? 12 selection criteria

 
A flexible data integration platform is one that grows with your situation: new source systems, a different migration pattern, more volume, without starting over. Choosing one isn't about counting features. You test the platform against your actual migration problem: which systems need to talk to each other, how you migrate (in one go or in phases), and what happens when the data isn't right along the way. Below are the 12 criteria that determine this in practice.

Why is this hard to choose?

 
Every vendor claims to be flexible and future-proof. That doesn't make the choice easier, because those words say nothing about your situation. A platform that's perfect for a one-time ERP migration is often the wrong platform for continuous synchronization between a CRM and a warehouse. In conversations with SMEs, we often see the choice made on price or brand recognition, and only after implementation does it become clear that the platform doesn't fit the migration pattern or lacks proper error handling. That means a second project.
 
That risk isn't bad luck. The 2025 DevOps Migration Index, a survey of more than 300 IT leaders, found that migration projects run 18% over budget on average, and that 61% of IT leaders experience delays of six months or longer. The cause is rarely the platform itself, but a migration pattern that doesn't fit or a validation layer that turns out to be missing only after the fact. The deadline slips, and the bill grows with it.

The 12 selection criteria for a flexible data integration platform

 
Go through these twelve points before you make a choice. They're ordered from "does the platform fit my systems" to "what does it cost me."

1. Source and target systems

 
The first criterion is whether the platform supports your current databases, files, APIs, and SaaS tools out of the box. Ask about the number of ready-made connectors for your systems (ERP, CRM, HR, e-commerce) and what happens if a system has no standard connector. If custom work is needed every time, you're not being flexible, you're building.

2. Migration pattern

 
Not every platform supports every migration pattern. One-time bulk load, phased migration, continuous synchronization during the transition, and CDC (change data capture) for near-real-time updates are four different technical challenges. Ask explicitly which of the four the platform can handle, because "migrating" means something different to every vendor.

3. Transformation capacity

 
Data changes shape along the way: fields get renamed, formats get converted, records get enriched. A flexible platform can handle complex mappings, applies data quality rules during transformation, and deals with schema evolution (a source system adding a new field without breaking the pipeline).

4. Validation layer and data quality

 
This criterion gets skipped most often, and it causes the most damage afterward. A data integration platform that moves data without checking whether the content is correct also moves the errors. A validation layer checks incoming data for accuracy before it's used in reports or other systems. Ask every platform: what happens when a record doesn't meet the rules, is it flagged, corrected, or passed through silently?

5. Flexibility and extensibility

 
Low-code is convenient for speed, but a platform that doesn't allow custom code gets stuck as soon as your situation gets specific. API-first architecture, version control on your pipelines, and CI/CD support determine whether your platform grows with you or becomes a dead end after two years.

6. Scalability and performance

 
Ask how the platform handles large data volumes within a limited migration window. Parallelization (running multiple pipelines at once) and the ability to restart after a failure without redoing everything make the difference between a migration that takes a weekend and one that takes a week.

7. Error handling and recoverability

 
Errors happen: an API is briefly unreachable, a file arrives corrupted. The question isn't whether that happens, but what the platform does about it. Does it restart automatically from the last successful point, or do you have to step in manually and risk duplicate or missing records?

8. Manageability and monitoring

 
A platform is only flexible if the people managing it can quickly see what's going on. Good observability, clear alerting on anomalies, and the ability to analyze a failed run and rerun it determine how much peace of mind you have after go-live.

9. Security and compliance

 
Encryption of data in transit and at rest, role-based access control (RBAC), secure secrets management, and logging aren't extras, they're requirements. For companies operating in the EU, GDPR adds another layer: where does the data live, who can access it, and can you prove that's true?

10. Vendor lock-in

 
Ask how portable your mappings and pipelines are if you ever switch platforms. Is the logic locked into a closed, proprietary format, or is it declarative and exportable? License fees, cost per record processed, implementation costs, and maintenance costs together determine the real price, not the entry fee. Ask about the cost model as you grow: what happens to the price if your data volume doubles? And just as important: who's on the hook for the bill if the migration runs over, you or the vendor?

12. Implementation time and support

 
How quickly is the platform operational, and what support do you get afterward? A platform that needs three months of implementation time for a problem you have next month might be technically excellent but practically the wrong choice.

What are the alternatives to MuleSoft or Boomi for SMEs?

 
Large enterprise platforms like MuleSoft and Boomi are built for organizations with their own integration teams and a matching budget. For SMEs with 50 to 250 employees, that's often overkill: you pay for functionality you don't use and hire in expertise you don't have in-house. A flexible data integration platform built for this scale avoids both problems, with the same attention to migration patterns but a validation layer that's often a separate tool at the larger platforms.

Batch, CDC, or real-time: which migration pattern fits your situation?

 
That depends on how much delay you can accept between a change in the source system and its arrival in the target system. Batch (for example, once a night) is enough for reports that don't need to be minute-accurate, and it's the simplest to build and manage. CDC follows changes almost instantly and is needed when processes depend on each other, like an inventory system a webshop needs to keep up with. Real-time synchronization is the most expensive to build and maintain, and it's only the right choice if the business process genuinely requires it.

The cost of a flexible data integration platform varies a lot by number of systems, migration pattern, and data volume, and any vendor who quotes a fixed price without that information is guessing too roughly. A one-time migration of two systems costs considerably less than continuous synchronization between five systems with a validation layer on top. That depends on the number of systems and the migration pattern chosen, and the schedule agreed upfront isn't automatically the schedule you'll hit. A migration of a single standalone system is often estimated at a few weeks to a couple of months, but in practice it regularly runs longer once data quality issues surface during the migration that weren't visible beforehand. The 2025 DevOps Migration Index found that 61% of IT leaders experience delays of six months or longer because of this. With multiple source systems and a validation layer added, plan for months rather than weeks. With a fixed price per project, at least the bill won't grow along with the schedule.

Yes, a good platform supports both cloud and on-premise systems side by side. Ask about this explicitly if you still have systems running on your own servers.

Not necessarily. A standard connection looks cheaper at first, but gets expensive as soon as your situation changes and the connection has to be rebuilt. A flexible platform often costs more at the start and less at the first change.

Data integration connects systems structurally, so information flows continuously or periodically. Data migration moves information once or in phases from one system to another, for example during a system switch.
